If you’ve been fitted with a CAM walker boot—also called a fracture boot—it’s because your podiatrist or orthopedic specialist wants to provide your injured foot or ankle with the right balance of stability, support, and mobility. These boots are commonly prescribed for conditions such as:
Foot or ankle fractures
Severe sprains
Achilles tendon injuries
Post-surgical recovery
Stress fractures and overuse injuries
A CAM (Controlled Ankle Motion) walker is designed to limit movement in your lower extremity while still allowing you to walk more comfortably than a traditional cast. But to heal properly, it’s important to wear and use the boot correctly.
Sit comfortably with your knee bent at 90 degrees.
Wear a long sock on the affected foot to reduce skin irritation and absorb moisture.
Open the boot completely by loosening all Velcro straps and the foam liner.
Slide your foot all the way back into the foam liner, making sure your heel is fully seated.
Close the liner snugly around your shin and foot.
Secure the Velcro straps, starting at the foot and moving up to the shin. Pull them snug, but not overly tight.
Check the fit before walking. The boot should feel secure, not loose.
If your boot has an air pump, inflate it until you feel gentle pressure around the ankle. Do not overfill, and avoid forcing the valve open, which can damage it.
Always take care when putting on and removing the boot.
Keep the boot snug but not so tight that it restricts circulation.
If you notice new pain, discomfort, or swelling, stop using the boot and contact your podiatrist immediately.
Because the boot has a built-in sole, it may make your walking stride uneven. Consider using a shoe with a similar sole height on the opposite foot. If you still feel unbalanced, ask your doctor about an EVEN-UP device, which attaches to your shoe to even out leg length.
Wear supportive shoes on your non-injured foot to maintain stability while walking.
The length of time you’ll need the boot depends on the severity of your condition. Some patients are advised to wear it only during the day or when walking, while others may need to keep it on most of the time—including at night. Always follow your doctor’s specific instructions, as wearing the boot inconsistently may slow down healing.
A CAM walker provides controlled mobility, which can speed up recovery compared to casting. However, misuse—such as wearing it too loosely, over-inflating the air bladder, or skipping use altogether—can delay healing or even cause additional injury.
By following your podiatrist’s guidance and using the above instructions, you’ll protect your foot or ankle and return to normal activity more safely and comfortably.
