If you’ve been prescribed an ankle brace, it means your podiatrist wants to stabilize your ankle while still allowing you to move. Ankle braces are often used for conditions such as:
Ankle sprains
Ligament injuries
Chronic ankle instability
Post-surgical recovery
Preventing re-injury in active patients
The goal is to provide support and protection so you can heal properly while staying mobile.
Follow these steps each time you apply your ankle brace:
Unfasten the Velcro straps and untie the laces.
Loosen the laces enough so your foot can easily slide into the brace.
Position your heel securely in the heel opening.
Tighten the laces snugly and tie them to hold your foot in place.
Apply the figure-8 straps across your ankle for additional stability.
Secure the straps to the Velcro tabs on both sides of the brace.
✔ Tip: The brace should feel snug and supportive, but not so tight that it restricts circulation.
To keep your ankle brace in good condition:
Hand wash in cold water with mild soap.
Do not bleach.
Line dry only—avoid direct sunlight or heat sources.
Store the brace in a cool, dry place.
Do not overtighten. Adjust straps and laces as necessary for comfort.
If you experience increased swelling, pain, numbness, or skin irritation, stop using the brace and contact your healthcare provider immediately.
This ankle brace is a support device. It cannot prevent new injuries or guarantee against recurrence.
Ankle braces work by limiting excessive side-to-side motion while still allowing normal walking. They help protect healing ligaments, reduce pain, and improve confidence in movement. Studies have shown that ankle bracing can reduce the risk of re-injury in athletes and speed up recovery in patients with ankle sprains.
Your doctor will determine how long you should wear your brace, depending on your condition. In most cases, it should be removed for sleeping, unless directed otherwise.
An ankle brace is an important tool in recovery from sprains, ligament injuries, or ankle instability. Proper application, cleaning, and safe use are essential for the best results.
